Character of the water

Fiolen lies in the south — a southern clear oligotrophic forest lake. In summer a thermocline settles around 7 m and splits the lake into two worlds.

The surroundings

The lake sits close to town with a road right up to it — easy to reach, but hard-fished and exposed to nutrient runoff from the buildings and fields all around.

Moderately deep (10 m) — shallow bays, the odd reef and a deeper channel through the middle.

Permits & rules

Fishing permit required — Fiolen FVOF. Day permit ~100 kr · annual permit ~500 kr.

  • Pike: keep at most one over 75 cm per day.
  • Handheld tackle only. Respect the protected zones at the inlets and outlets.

Pike is a sight-hunter here — the clear water means long follows before the take.
roach coarse fish
typically ~17 cm · can reach 31 cm
Here roach lives on the small stuff — and rewards those who fish small and fine.
whitefish whitefish
typically ~18 cm · can reach 34 cm
Whitefish cruises the open water — the depth it picks follows the light through the day.

Fishing Fiolen

Fiolen holds 4 species, with perch and pike at the top of the chain and roach and whitefish schooling beneath them. The modest depth keeps most of the fishing within reach of the bank.

Every session at Fiolen is fished in whatever conditions hold right then — the same pressure, wind and light as over the real water. What bites today isn't what bit the day before, and those who return learn the water for real.

General rules of thumb for this kind of water

  • Stratified, oxygen-poor lakes push the fish up above the thermocline in summer.
