Character of the water

Hörnan lies in central Sweden — a mesotrophic stratified lake. In summer a thermocline settles around 6 m and splits the lake into two worlds.

The surroundings

The lake sits close to town with a road right up to it — easy to reach, but hard-fished and exposed to nutrient runoff from the buildings and fields all around.

Shallow throughout (max 2 m), with reeds and vegetation over large areas — water that warms fast in spring.

Permits & rules

Fishing permit required — Hörnan FVOF. Day permit ~60 kr · annual permit ~300 kr.

  • Pike: keep at most one over 75 cm per day.
  • Handheld tackle only. Respect the protected zones at the inlets and outlets.

Roach moves carefully in the clear water — small mouthfuls, many of them.
vendace whitefish
typically ~16 cm · can reach 28 cm

burbot bottom fish
typically ~45 cm · can reach 90 cm
Burbot holds the bottom even in clear water — shade and depth are its cover.

Fishing Hörnan

Hörnan holds 5 species, with perch, pike and burbot at the top of the chain and roach and vendace schooling beneath them. The modest depth keeps most of the fishing within reach of the bank.

Every session at Hörnan is fished in whatever conditions hold right then — the same pressure, wind and light as over the real water. What bites today isn't what bit the day before, and those who return learn the water for real.
