Character of the water

Mingen lies in central Sweden — a clear oligotrophic forest lake. The water is crystal-clear and the fish skittish in the sharp light.

The surroundings

The lake sits close to town with a road right up to it — easy to reach, but hard-fished and exposed to nutrient runoff from the buildings and fields all around.

Shallow throughout (max 3 m), with reeds and vegetation over large areas — water that warms fast in spring.

Permits & rules

Fishing permit required — Mingen FVOF. Day permit ~60 kr · annual permit ~300 kr.

  • Pike: keep at most one over 75 cm per day.
  • Handheld tackle only. Respect the protected zones at the inlets and outlets.

Species in Mingen

typically ~10 cm · can reach 30 cm
Here perch lives on the small stuff — and rewards those who fish small and fine.

Pike is a sight-hunter here — the clear water means long follows before the take.
roach coarse fish
typically ~16 cm · can reach 27 cm
Here roach lives on the small stuff — and rewards those who fish small and fine.
ruda fish
typically ~34 cm · can reach 42 cm
Ruda holds the bottom even in clear water — shade and depth are its cover.

Fishing Mingen

Mingen holds 4 species, with perch and pike at the top of the chain and roach and ruda schooling beneath them. The modest depth keeps most of the fishing within reach of the bank.

Every session at Mingen is fished in whatever conditions hold right then — the same pressure, wind and light as over the real water. What bites today isn't what bit the day before, and those who return learn the water for real.

General rules of thumb for this kind of water

  • Clear water makes fish light-shy — dawn, dusk and night are usually best.
